The Jets fired GM Joe Douglas today.
Aside from being a bad fit with Woody Johnson, a more hands-on owner than the man who hired him, another issue that contributed to the firing, was the horrible state of the Jets’ defense.
The Jets’ defense, which was overrated by the media entering the season, has been embarrassed in a number of games this year, especially the last two, where they made average QBs, Kyler Murray and Anthony Richardson, look like Tom Brady.
The Jets have major talent issues on defense, and obviously, Douglas deserves some of the blame there.
The biggest issue was his deferring to the former head coach too much on defensive personnel decisions.
The former head coach would fall in love with certain players, and roll with them ad infinitum, regardless of how bad the film was.
There were some defensive players, from the 2023 Jets, that should not have been brought back, but they were, because of the former coach’s love affair with the human beings.
So a Douglas Achilles heal, which contributed to his firing, was deferring to the former coach too much when it came to defensive personnel, instead of just going by the film, and saying, “No coach, we are not bringing that guy back.”
