Listening to Pat Kirwan and Jim Miller on SiriusXM NFL Radio on Thursday, Pat made a great point about the Jets and what their mindset should be in protecting QB Aaron Rodgers.
Now, I was in the car, on a highway, so I wasn’t able to write down the exact quote, but the essence of what Kirwan said was, “If you are a Jets offensive lineman, and somebody gets by you, tackle the guy, and take the penalty, don’t let Rodgers get hit.”
While some might not think penalties are ever a good thing, in this case they might be.
You have a franchise QB who is 40 years old coming off a season-ending torn Achilles tendon.
If a defender gets by an offensive lineman and is going to light up Rodgers, tackle the guy, and take the 10-yard holding call.
In the long run, it’s worth it. Don’t let the future Hall-of-Famer take a lot of hits.
And plus, he’s such a proficient passer, there is always a good chance he will get the penalty yardage back on the plays that follow.
Don’t worry about your PFF grade, protect this guy at all costs.
