Powerful statement from Darren Mougey – a guarantee . . .

During his press briefing at the combine, Jets GM Darren Mougey channeled Joe Namath by making a guarantee.

“We’re going to be better next year,” Mougey said.

This was in the middle of an answer. It might have been a throwaway line to some. The question was about short-term plans vs. long-term plans.

But a GM guaranteeing his team will be better this year, especially before free agency and the draft, is newsworthy.

You don’t hear them say that very often.

Now, some sarcastic types might snarkily say, “They can’t get any worse than last season.”

That isn’t true.

You can always get worse. They won three games last year. Obviously, you can win less than that.

Remember, in 1995, the Jets went 3-13, and then they went on a spending spree to help the coach in the off-season, and went 1-15 the next year.

But if Mougey’s proclamation is going to come true, the team definitely needs to improve its roster.

When asked about retaining RB Breece Hall, the GM said, “He’s a playmaker, and we want to keep playmakers around on both sides of the ball.”

The problem right now is they don’t have many, if any, big-time difference-makers on one side of the ball – defense, so they need to address that this offseason with four selections in the first two rounds and plenty of cap space.

They also need to find a QB.

But the bottom line is any guarantee from a GM or coach is a big deal, and Mougey provided one on Tuesday.
