New Jersey – I just don’t see it, Maybe I’m missing something, but I just don’t see it. At the Owner’s Meetings in Orlando, Rex Ryan was asked a lot of questions about his quarterback situation.
Ryan has settled in on this main talking point when talking about the Geno Smith-Michael Vick “competition.”
“It’s going to be really interesting to watch that competition unfold,” Ryan said. “But Geno Smith is going to be hard to beat out.”
I just don’t see it.
Rex needs to win this year, and he’s going to start Geno Smith over Michael Vick?
And why would Geno Smith be hard to beat out?
Somebody really needs to explain that me.
Geno turned the ball over 25 times last year – 21 picks and four fumbles. He had a 66.5 QB rating.
And how many Pick Sixes?
The answer is five.
Look I’m not looking to beat up Geno. He has a lot of potential, and could be very good in time. But to act like he’s going to be tough to beat out, is major spin.
“Everyone has the same chance,” Ryan said. “There will be competition to where we’ll find the best guy… who we think is the best guy moving forward.”
And that is clearly Vick.
I’m not putting Vick in Canton, but he’s got so much more experience than Geno, has seen so much, has taken teams to the playoffs.
“I think everybody’s going to be surprised at where Geno’s at,” Ryan said.
How does he know, he hasn’t seen him on the field in three months?
I keep hearing about this great finish Geno had to the season.
It was okay, but some people around the Jets are going overboard with the praise, as they are wont to do (and this gets them in trouble, because sometimes reality eludes some of them).
The last month is getting embellished.
The Jets month of December started off with an embarrassing loss to Miami at home in a game that Geno had an 8.3 QB rating.
Two of the wins were over awful teams at home – Cleveland and Oakland. In-between those two wins over two bad teams with a lot of injuries, the Jets lost at Carolina, a game Geno had a 34.9 QB rating and another Pick Six.
And then the Jets beat Miami 20-7 in a game Geno had no touchdown passes.
I think Geno can be good in time, but he’s still a major project, and to say. “Geno Smith is going to be hard to beat out,” is Rex selling something, I don’t even think he believes.
Geno still telegraphs too many passes, doesn’t read defenses that well, doesn’t sense the blitz very well and holds the ball too long.
In his defense, I think coaches, GM’s, owners and so forth rush young quarterbacks in the modern age. It’s unhealthy. They expect them to figure out the most difficult position in all of sports in a year or two, and that is unrealistic. The light bulb didn’t truly go on for Terry Bradshaw until he was around 28.
I’m sorry, Geno is not going to be “tough to beat out” for Michael Vick.
I’m not hating.
Just trying to keep it real.
