SUNY Cortland – A heaping helping of scrimmage Whispers including notes on a Sanchez shoulder injury . . . both L.T.’s getting it done . . . Clowney-Allison . . . Westerman . . . Brunell and more . . . DON’T MISS OUT!
Matt Slauson started at left guard, but Vlad Ducasse ended up getting more reps.
Ducasse showed his enormous potential on a Joe McKnight run up the middle. He had one of the key blocks on the play by pancaking NT Matt Kroul . . .
You get the sense LaDainian Tomlinson is going to catch a lot of passes this season. With all the double teams that the Jets wide receivers and Dustin Keller are doing to receive, L.T. is going to create some major coverage mismatches.
One such mismatch was on the first play of the scrimmage when he beat David Harris on a deep completion down the left sideline. He also caught a pass in the right flat on linebacker Lance “Peter” Laury.
“If you put a linebacker on him, good luck,” Rex Ryan said . . .
Marquice Cole continues to have a solid camp. He showed his impressive wheels keeping up with Santonio Holmes down the left sideline to break up a fade route from Mark Brunell . . .
Later in the practice, Holmes blew by rookie free agent cornerback Brian Jackson for a long touchdown catch down the right sideline from Sanchez. This was a mismatch of biblical proportion. Holmes runs 4.3 and Jackson runs 4.6. . . .
David Clowney hurt himself with his leave of absence over the last couple of days. He’s probably on the fence, and Andrae Allison continues to gain ground on him for perhaps the final receiver spot. Allison did a good job catching a low slant from Kellen Clemens and got some quality YAC on the play. The speedy East Carolina-product has had a very good camp . . .
Three reserve linebackers – Jamaal Westerman, Josh Mauga and Kenwin Cummings were all very active in the scrimmage. These three cats were around the ball consistently.
Westerman had a number of impressive plays including one where he flew off the edge and stopped Chauncey Washington for a loss.
Early in the scrimmage, Calvin Pace beat Wayne Hunter for a sack of Kellen Clemens. Hunter is a very good swing tackle, but right tackle is his stronger position . . .
The only bad play of note from Mark Sanchez was when he was way off target to Holmes on a short route on the right side. It looked like they weren’t on the same page . . .
The Jets have some pretty good offensive line prospects on their third string unit. Center Robbie Felix and guard Charlie Tanner opened up a big hole for Chauncey Washington on a 25-yard touchdown run late in the scrimmage . . .
Former CFL star Larry Taylor continues to do a lot of good things. He connected with Kevin O’Connell on a deep out. He also drew a pass interference penalty on Coles on a deep route.
He looks like a strong practice squad candidate . . .
Mark Brunell didn’t have a great practice.
He threw a pick right into the hands of safety Emanuel Cook, who dropped it. Also, he and Brad Smith weren’t on the same page on a route on the right side. Smith stopped in the middle of the route like he was going to cut, and Brunell through a fly route.
We have to keep in mind that Brunell signed very late and is still learning the offense . . .
Jason Davis is a good receiving fullback. He made a really nice catch on the right side on a swing pass from Kevin O’Connell . . .
Jeff Cumberland was held out of the scrimmage with a concussion suffered in Friday morning’s practice . . .
Mark Sanchez’s father Nick, who was in attendence at the scrimmage, had has his left arm in a sling nursing some kind of shoulder injury..
