One of the Jets’ biggest needs is to improve their run defense, especially up front, so you have to wonder if Arik Armstead will be on their radar.
The San Francisco 49ers plan to release the veteran defensive tackle for salary cap reasons.
If the Jets can get him at a reasonable price, he could be a boon to their interior run defense.
The 17th pick overall in the 2015 draft out of Oregon, the 6-7, 290-pound Armstead had a solid career in San Francisco, but is coming off a down year due to a meniscus injury, which he had surgery on after the season.
So if he gets a clean bill of health, this guy could make a lot of sense for the Jets if the price is right.
And obviously, he is familiar with the Jets’ system, playing under Robert Saleh in San Francisco, when the Jets’ head coach was the 49ers’ defensive coordinator from 2017-20.
Not only is he a very talented player when healthy, but a man of great character, who would be good for the Jets’ culture, which Aaron Rodgers said needs to be “fine-tuned.”
