No harm is meant . . .
. . . but some would argue that it might not be ideal culturally.
And we all know the Jets focus on building a strong football culture.
On June 1, there was a tweet from somebody connected to the organization about last year’s Jets-Patriots game at MetLife Stadium. It was a highlight package of each of the Jets’ six sacks in that game.
Above the highlighted package of sacks was a comment – “What’s better than one sack? Six sacks.”
Some fans weren’t enamored of this tweet, because the Jets lost the game 22-17, which was their 13th straight loss to New England.
“I prefer a win, but that’s me,” tweeted Kevin.
“Meanwhile…As usual…they beat you twice…Why are you talking like this in June? tweeted Maria Gentile.
“Maybe not the best look to post highlights from a game we lost – just saying,” tweeted Drew Lamsky.
“What’s better than 6 sacks? Winning the game,” tweeted Kelly Reinsmith.
“I was at that game with my 8-year-old. Worst loss I have ever witnessed in my life, with 6 sacks,” tweeted Eric Colon.
“Rather have the W and no sacks,” tweeted John Chiechi.
“How about winning the game? SMH (Shake my head),” tweeted Lou Molina.
“Unfortunately 6 sacks didn’t lead to a win,” tweeted Haru Soul.
The fans have spoken.
They don’t like the concept of celebrating stats in a loss.
Perhaps it’s time to move on from the concept of moral victories, especially if you want to build a powerful football culture.
This isn’t a case of making a mountain out of a molehill. It’s an issue.
And it might not send the right message to the players.
Also, it really bothers some of the customers, as you saw above.
It’s time to figure out a way to move on from this.
Not sure how it’s going to happen, but if they want to have an elite football culture, they must avoid this stuff at all costs.
It doesn’t send a great message. In a way, it promotes moral victories, and participation trophies.
As Bill Parcells like to say, “No medals for trying.”
It’s hard to imagine Vince Lombardi, if Twitter existed back in his era, being thrilled with this.
Lombardi used to always say during his successful run in Green Bay: “Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.”
So you know he wouldn’t have loved a tweet like that, if such a thing existed back in the 1950s and 60s during his great coaching career.
Is there anything that can be done to make this change?
Jets fans can only hope.
Because Jets fans want a championship very badly.
And some would argue promoting accomplishments from losses, is bad for their culture.
Fans, who understand culture, can only hope that it stops one day.
They have a very talented roster and a future Hall-of-Fame QB in the fold.
The Jets have missed the playoffs 12 years in a row, the longest streak in professional sports.
They and their fans desperately want that dubious streak to end.
They need a lot of real victories in the 2023-24 season and no more moral victories.
