East Rutherford – The Jets lost 41-10, and their biggest problem reared its ugly once again, a problem that is the biggest reason for their 3-9 . . .
Jets starting outside linebackers in this game were Mike Catapano and Jordan Jenkins. Two great guys, tough guys, but neither is much of a pass rusher. Neither runs that well. Catapano bull rushes every play.
When you face Andrew Luck, with zero edge rush, you can’t expect to win. From a passing rushing standpoint, this is waving the white flag. They both couldn’t get off blocks. Catapano bull rushes on every play. You aren’t going to beat tackles like Anthony Costanzo running right into them.
Todd Bowles needs to stop standing on ceremony with his depth chart.
Like Rontez Miles – who had issues in pass coverage tonight.
Miles is a great run support safety, but not good in coverage, and the Colts are an outstanding passing team. Play Antonio Allen.
Stop this next man up stuff all the time – think outside the box man – forget your depth chart.
Josh Martin is a better edge pass rusher than Catapano and Jenkins. He didn’t get on the field tonight.
I don’t think Bowles is great at personnel utilization. True, he doesn’t have final say on the roster, but he does on who plays. It’s like next man up no matter what.
And now that Fitzpatrick has been replaced so should Revis, but I don’t think they will do it.
I have said it before, and I will say it again – the Jets pass defense is their #1 problem this year, the biggest reason for their 3-9 record. Not Fitzpatrick.
The Jets gave up 41 points tonight. There probably isn’t a QB in their history, aside from Joe Namath in his prime, who could have overcome that kind of deficit.
Here is the problem, and nobody is bringing this up. Fitzpatrick’s biggest problem his year is the Jets pass defense.
Look, I’m not a Fitzpatrick apologist. He’s been very average this year, but the Jets’ pass defense has given up so many big plays and points, and created lopsided scores, he’s been forced to throw too much, into this Tom Brady-mode throwing, it all over the lot, and that isn’t in his wheelhouse. He’s a game manager, not Aaron Rodgers.
Last year the Jets kept the scores under control, and they ran the ball well with Chris Ivory, so Fitz could play a complementary role.
This year, there are too many big numbers being allowed by the defense, and he can’t match them.
So to me, the Jets pass defense is the #1 problem.
And part of that problem is no edge pressure.
By the way, the guy I felt the Jets should have picked in the first or second round, Ohio State pass rusher Noah Spence, is having a terrific rookie season down in Tampa Bay. He’s just what the Jets needed.
When you have a no edge pass rush, and a bad secondary, you can’t in the NFL, which has turned into a passing league. No way.
And there is no way you can beat a QB as good as Andrew Luck with no edge pressure. No way.
