The Jets have released reserve quarterback Tim Tebow. The announcement was made by Brian Costello of the New York Post.
“Tebow Time is up,” wrote Costello.
“The Jets released popular backup quarterback Tim Tebow on Monday morning, The Post has learned, three days after they drafted Geno Smith in the second round to compete with Mark Sanchez, David Garrard and Greg McElroy for the starting quarterback spot.”
The Jets were trying to trade Tebow, but clearly couldn’t find a taker.
Now the Jets have David Garrard, Greg McElroy, Geno Smith, Mark Sanchez and Matt Simms at the quarterback position.
There is a good chance they move on from Sanchez at some point, and let Gerrard, McElroy and Smith battle for the job.
Either Garrard or McElroy could be a good “hold-the-fort” quarterback, as Bill Parcells used to say, until Smith is ready.
Smith probably needs to be red-shirted this year. He has great raw skills, but needs a ton of work on technique, pocket presence and reading defenses. If the Jets start him this year, they would probably be making a big mistake. He’s not ready.
