A few days after the season, Todd Bowles fired special teams coach Robert “Bobby” April
Last Wednesday at the combine, he was asked why he made the move.
“I just thought there was a disconnect,” Bowles said.
Where was the disconnect?
“That’s something Bobby and I discussed and I’ll keep that between us,” Bowles said.
Perhaps there was a disconnect between Bowles and April.
But the bigger disconnect was between April and the Jets’ personnel department.
The veteran special teams coach wasn’t dealt the best personnel hand, whether it was the group of punt coverage players provided, or the lack of a bonafide kick returner.
And Bowles did acknowledge this was part of the problem.
“We’ve got to get better players, as well,” Bowles said in Indy.
The Jets’ personnel department needs to provide new special teams coach Brant Boyer the requisite players to succeed.
And they know that.
