Phoenix – There was a TV sitcom a long time ago named “One Day at a Time,” starring Valerie Bertinelli.
And that title is probably the best approach in football – take it “one day at a time” and don’t look too far down the road.
On Tuesday, Jets coach Aaron Glenn made news when he said about QB Geno Smith: “I just feel like he’s the guy that’s going to lead us to the promised land.”
Former Alabama football coach Nick Saban was a big believer in something called “Process thinking” with his teams.
“Don’t think about winning the SEC Championship,” Saban once said. “Don’t think about the national championship. Think about what you needed to do in this drill, on this play, in this moment.”
So some would surmise it’s best for Smith to focus on the process now, and not on taking the Jets to the “promised land.”
Once the off-season program starts, focus on learning the playbook, the next conditioning drill, the next film session, and so forth.
Smith showed in Seattle, for three years in a row, that he can be a good game manager and lead his team to winning records.
But for now, perhaps, it’s best not to think about leading the Jets to the “promised land” during the season, but more about the process leading to the season.
Focusing on stacking one good day of hard work on top of another.
“Focus on the process and the results will take care of themselves,” Saban liked to say.
