When the Jets put nose tackle T’Vondre Sweat on the NFI list with a hamstring injury to start camp, some wondered if this was related to his conditioning and weight, which have been heavily scrutinized since his days at Texas and then with the Tennessee Titans.
Not the case.
Jets GM Darren Mougey said the team is happy with the player’s weight and conditioning, and the hamstring injury has nothing to do with any of that.
“All of those things, the conditioning, the weight, was all in a very good place,” Mougey said on Wednesday. “Unfortunately, had a little hamstring injury while he was training, so he’ll start on NFI, but we’ll work him back, and he’s going to help this team.”
What is Sweat’s weight right now? It’s unclear. He’s listed at 366, but sometimes NFL roster weights aren’t up to date. This isn’t just a Jets thing, but with most teams. These weights are often from the past.
But a couple of years ago, Sweat made it clear what the ideal weight is for him on the NFL level.
“If I go to 355, 350 (pounds), most likely I am going to be a Hall of Famer,” Sweat said to the Nashville media after being picked in the second round of the 2024 draft.
So that should clearly be the target of Sweat and the Jets’ conditioning coaches.
And perhaps he’s at that now.
But that is hard for the media and public to discern.
His current weight has not been made public, and some would argue it’s nobody’s business.
Just saying official roster weights mean very little in the NFL.
