Early this week, the Miami Dolphins traded tight end Jonnu Smith (along with cornerback Jalen Ramsey) to the Pittsburgh Steelers.
So the Jets will face Smith (and Ramsey) in Week 1.
And one thing is for sure, they’d better cover the speedy tight end better than they did in Miami’s 32-26 OT win on December 8 at Hard Rock Stadium.
Miami won the toss in overtime and went on a game-winning, 8-play 70-yard TD drive.
On this drive, the Jets’ coverage of Smith was substandard.
He had receptions of 20 and 14 yards to help Miami march down the field with ease, and then caught a game-winning 10-yard TD pass from QB Tua Tagovailoa.
If you go back and look at the game-winning TD, there seemed to be some kind of communication issue related to who was covering whom.
There were too many of those last year.
It goes without saying, the Jets need to cover Smith a heck of a lot better than they did on that drive in overtime in Miami Gardens last year.
And, in general, they need to cover tight ends better than they did last year.
