Dewitt – A Saturday Night Special version of Website Whispers with nuggets about Cumberland, Ellis, inappropriate reporting, Carrier, O’Connell, Wilson and much more. Just $7.95 month. A steal.
How did tight end Jeff Cumberland suffer his concussion? He was attempting to catch a pass over the middle, had his legs cut out from under him, and fell on his head. That is certainly a great way to get a concussion. He’s been full go the last two days, and he picked up where he left off. He’s a very tough cover for linebackers with his sub-4.5 speed . . .
The Jets have a little issue with the media tweeting and asking Rex about trick plays. The Jets want to be as media-friendly as possible, but even the most accommodating team doesn’t want this stuff reported . . .
Training camp is for getting the kinks out, so there is no need for Jets fans to panick, but Mark Sanchez has been underwhelming in camp so far. His accuracy isn’t up to his usual standards.
He looked pissed off walking off the Saturday afternoon practice field. He’s his own worst critic.
Perhaps all the time on the shelf this off-season rehabbing his knee set back his maturation process.
But this is non-story until the third preseason game. If he’s struggling in that contest (the most legitimate of the three exhibition games), that is a cause for concern. Now is the time to let shake the cobwebs off . . .
Andrae Allison is having a really solid camp. It’s one of those camps where he’s not cutting himself . . .
Mark Carrier is a terrific coach and a very bright man, but he’s starting to sound like a Little League father with how often he yells, “Good job Vernon.”
Gholston is having an average camp. He flashes once in a while, but still has major issues getting off blocks . . .
The Jets are limiting Shaun Ellis’ reps a great deal because of his problematic left knee . . .
Brad Smith threw another deep duck today. He does so many things well, but his passing skills need a lot of work . . .
It was impeccable timing. For the first time this summer, Rex Ryan talked about cornerback Brian Jackson in his press conference, and in the afternoon practice, he went out a grabbed an impressive pick.
The Jets really, really like the Oklahoma corner. The kid has a lot of talent. His one shortcoming is his lack of ideal speed. He runs in the 4.5-4.6 area, but he gets high marks in most other areas. His instinctive and is a big-time hitter.
It might be hard to find a roster spot for him, and he could be a dangerous practice squad placement because a lot of teams like him. He is nursing a knee injury. Perhaps the Jets could stash him in IR for the year . . .
Kyle Wilson is getting a lot of starting reps at the cornerback spot opposite Antonio Cromartie. He’s so smart and such a quick study, he’s definitely that kind of kid you can start as a rookie . . .
I was saying to myself during the afternoon practice, “You know what, Kevin O’Connell has really improved.”
And on the very next play, he threw the aforementioned pick to Jackson in the red zone.
The Jets have so many tough roster decisions to make that I could see them keeping two quarterbacks – Sanchez and Mark Brunell, with Brad Smith serving as the #3.
This would allow them to keep somebody like Allison, Josh Mauga, Jackson or Chauncey Washington . . .
With the injuries to Mauga (concussion) and Brashton Satele (ankle), Kenwin Cummings is basically going to play the whole game.
And based on what I saw the last two weeks in Cortland, expect him to really impress. He’s big (6-3, 250), fast, instinctive and tough.
