Totally disagree with this headline.
It’s kind of tone deaf.
Miami Herald – “With Sam Darnold out, the Miami Dolphins become massive favorites vs. New York Jets.
They have different playing styles, but honestly, there is no drop off from Darnold to Joe Flacco. They didn’t “become massive favorites,” they were “massive favorites” against either QB.
Last week, when it came out that Flacco was playing instead of Darnold, the Las Vegas line didn’t move. It stayed at 7.
The spread right now is Dolphins by nine. It would probably be about the same with Darnold playing.
In my opinion, the reason the spread is so high has more to do with the Jets’ defense than their offense. Neither side of the ball is very good right now, but the Jets’ defense might be even worse then their offense. There is almost no pass rush and so many missed assignments in pass coverage, including zone concepts with consistently wide open gaps, providing opposing quarterbacks with very easy throws.
And because of how bad the defense is, if the Jets fire Adam Gase in-season, it would be hard to justify promoting Gregg Williams to interim head coach, a position he held in Cleveland.
If Gase is fired in-season, which I’m not saying he will be, the interim is a no-brainer in my opinion, and that is special team’s coach Brant Boyer, an absolute fire-brand . . .
The Jets are probably going to get back Bless Austin from a calf injury this week to start opposite Pierre Desir . . .
It was the parade of the tall, fast receivers today at Jets practice, with Breshad Perriman, Denzel Mims and Vyncint Smith all back at practice coming off the injury list. All three are 6-3 with 4.3 speed. They all should add a new element to a receiving game with their rare combinations of size and speed . . .
This new Jet running back, Ty Johnson, a University of Maryland-product, has has really quick feet and a great burst. The Jets claimed him off waivers earlier this month from the Detroit Lions . . .
Nothing against these guys because they are both impressive guys with great character, but not sure why Gregg Williams is rolling with the end combination of Jordan Jenkins and Kyle Phillips. Not a lot of speed, twitch or quickness there.
Some of the personnel decisions on defense I’m at a loss to explain, like why Harvey Langi went into the Witness Protection program since the opener in Buffalo.
Let me ask y’all a question. Has there been a play in pass coverage by a linebacker this year anywhere as impressive since Week One than Langi’s PD on B Devin Singletary on the goalline in Buffalo?
There is some kind of disconnect on defense here between the personnel department, head coach and defensive coordinator.
Jets need a football czar and less sub-contracting.
Like there is this defensive tackle, every time he rotates in, he can’t get off blocks, and big runs go right at him, yet they continue to rotate him in?
The film don’t lie.
