If you want to be an elite defense, you can’t allow layups like this . . .

Florham Park – After the Jets-Giants joint practice in Florham Park, Jets coach Aaron Glenn said, “I’m looking forward to seeing the tape. I’m looking forward to meeting with the players and seeing exactly what we can improve on.”

Two plays they need to “improve on” were back-to-back touchdowns by Giants QB Russell Wilson in a red zone drill.

First, Wilson hit tight end Theo Johnson for a touchdown, and then wide receiver Darius Slayton.

You could argue the Jets’ defense covered neither play in an ideal fashion.

It’s unfair to guess who was at fault on these plays without having access to the team’s playbook or the actual defensive play call.

But considering the Giants were without star receiver Malik Nabors, who often draws double coverage, it makes you wonder what happened on these two plays leading to such easy throws for Wilson.

But this is a benefit of these joint practices.

After a few weeks of camp practicing against your offense, you kind of get used to a lot of the play calls, making coverage a little easier.

However, the wrinkles the Giants threw at the Jets’ secondary, which they had not seen before, gave Glenn and his secondary coaches many quality teachable moments in the film sessions that followed today’s practice.
