Coming off a rough defensive season, the Jets added many new players on that side of the ball.
Along with adding a lot of fresh talent, the team’s brass also wanted to add some savvy vets who could improve the communication and leadership on that side of the ball.
Enter linebacker Demario Davis and safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, two new additions who have quikcly emerged as the leaders of the Jets’ defense.
New Jets cornerback Nahshon Wright appreciates how hard those guys worked this off-season to bring the defense together.
“I think Demario has kind of been at the forefront of everything,” said Wright, who had five picks for the Chicago Bears last year. “He’s been leading us, and everybody is taking heed of that and following him.”
And Fitzpatrick has provided a high-level communicator to lead the deep patrol, something the Jets desperately needed, after a season rife with communication breakdowns in pass coverage.
“Minkah is super-talkative,” Wright said. “In the meetings, if you have a young guy who doesn’t see it as [Fitpatrick] sees it, he’s going to give him coaching points, like, ‘this formation you can anticipate this.'”
So it sounds like not only can Davis and Fitzpatrick help the Jets defense with their playmaking ability, but they can also act like coaches on the field and make sure the Jets are organized before and after the snap, which wasn’t always the case last season.
