Florham Park – The Jets’ run defense on Buffalo’s first possession on Monday Night was awful.
On the Bills 70-yard TD drive, they had runs of 12, 14 and 15 yards.
Late on this drive, ESPN play-by-play man Joe Buck said the Bills were “running it down their throats.”
So considering how much the Pittsburgh Steelers like to run the ball, Jets coach Jeff Ulbrich knows they can’t repeat this on Sunday.
“It’s the absolute number one thing that we have to get accomplished this Sunday,” Ulbrich said. “We have to the stop run, we got to do a better job than we have the last couple games especially, so a huge point of emphasis.”
And how do they intend to fix this big problem?
“There’s a lot of elements to it for one, edge setting and that’s at all levels, making sure that we edge things,’ Ulbrich said. “Next gap discipline’s a huge part of it. The call can absolutely help these guys making sure that we have eight-man boxes and then I got all the gaps filled up and then it’s a mindset.”
What does he mean by “mindset?”
“There’s an element to stopping the run where like it’s going to be on my terms,” Ulbrich said. “We’re going to establish a new line of scrimmage. We’re going to get 11 hats to the ball. You do that consistently and you maintain that mindset and physicality, typically good things happen, so we just got to play it better and we will.”
