Phoenix – If this ends up being the trade compensation, Jets fans should feel pretty good about it.
According to Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson, the Packers and Jets are getting “closer” to a deal that would trade QB Aaron Rodgers for one of the Jets’ second-round picks in this year’s draft and another in next year’s draft.
This would be a terrific deal for the Jets because they will still have a second-round in the 2023 draft after trading WR Elijah Moore to the Cleveland Browns. So they will still be in the second round, and pick pretty high. And they signed comparable talent Mecole Hardman to replace Moore.
Having picks in the first two rounds this year to land two potential starters, is huge for the Jets, who aren’t one player away. While you can obviously get good talent in later rounds, the key to any good draft is truly nailing your first and round picks. Those rounds are rife with top-shelf talent.
So if the Jets get Rodgers, and still can go out and get two difference-making players in the first two rounds this year, that is a pretty darn good scenario for Gang Green.
Now there could be provisions to tweak the picks in 2024 based on Rodgers’ performance this season, and if he retires after it, but from a 2023 standpoint, this proposed deal would be terrific for Gang Green, who would still be picking in the first two rounds in 2023.
