This guy is not a hack – when he talks, people listen . . .

There are numerous talking heads offering hot takes on various sports shows these days, whose opinions are best taken with a grain of salt.

But then there are old-school reporters, who take a more measured approach, based on pragmatism and research, not cheap shots, whose words mean a lot more.

ESPN’s Sal Paolantonio is one of those guys.

This is what he said Tuesday on ESPN:

“We really didn’t expect in Week 4 that Aaron Glenn’s team would be this undisciplined,” Paolantonio said. “We thought by this time, that they would not be making the kind of easy mistakes that are avoidable even for a young team.”

Some would argue that it is a fair, even-keeled way to assess the current state of the Jets.

Nobody expected Florham Park to be built in a day, but many didn’t expect some of what we have seen either.

You could argue the team is tough, but so far, they are not particularly disciplined, something many expected them to be under Glenn.

In a loss to Miami on Monday night, they committed 13 penalties.

It’s too early to know how Glenn’s program will do over the long haul – the program could be very successful in time.

But so far, it’s really hard to tell much difference from the team we saw the last few seasons under the prior regime.

That should not be considered a cheap shot. As Bill Parcells liked to say, “I’m just going by what I see, fellas.”

Parcells also liked to say, “You are what your record says it is.”

And also, when “Sal Pal” talks, people listen, because he’s not a hack, which the industry is loaded with these days.
