Florham Park – One of the reasons that Miami linebacker Kiko Mauigoa dropped to the 2025 fifth round, where the Jets grabbed him, was questions about his coverage ability.
Nobody questioned his ability as a thumper against the run, but some wondered if he would be able to hold up in coverage on the next level.
Well, if today was any indication, he might be a little better than advertised in pass coverage.
He had two nice plays in pass coverage today. First, he jumped a route and nearly had a pick-six, and then he had tight coverage on WR Jamal Pritchett, forcing an incompletion.
Mauigoa, who transferred to Miami from Washington State, is a very instinctive linebacker, which often puts him in the right place at the right time
The Jets need to improve the pass coverage of their linebackers this year, and this is a player who might be able to help.
The native of American Samoa has a good feel for the game and trusts his eyes, and this has allowed him to make a lot of plays in camp, even with limited reps.
