With the Jets’ defense coming off a substandard season and in need of perhaps 6-7 new defensive starters, picking defensive players with their two first-round picks is not out of the question.
So after likely addressing defense with the #2 pick overall, it’s possible they could turn around at 16 and pick another defender.
And a prospect who seems to fit in around 16 from a value standpoint is Miami defensive end Akheem Mesidor, who has a big fan in NFL Network lead draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah, a former NFL scout.
“He plays outside, he plays inside,” Jeremiah said. “It’s not fair when it’s him against college guards. He just kills them in there. He’s got a violent club move. He’s got knockback power. This guy never stops. There is just never a break you can take when you are blocking Akheem Mesidor. He is an absolute warrior.”
Mesidore finished last season with 12.5 sacks and 17.5 tackles for loss.
While many are pushing the Jets to pick a receiver in the first round, you could argue that adding two front-seven players to improve a pass rush that was virtually non-existent in many games last year might not be the worst idea in the world.
“Mesidore is one of my favorite players in this draft,” Jeremiah said.
