Oregon QB Dante Moore announced on Wednesday that he’s staying in school and not entering the 2026 draft.
Some Jets fans are devastated by this, but perhaps they shouldn’t be.
Moore demonstrated in a recent college football playoff loss to Indiana that he is still very raw and requires significant improvement.
Additionally, while he possesses outstanding raw skills (strong arm and mobility), like many successful college quarterbacks, one has to wonder if he’s a system quarterback.
A lot of college quarterbacks flourish on that level in one-read systems where the OC is basically dialing up easy stuff for them to execute against overmatched college defenses, most of which are not very good.
The starting QB at Oregon before Moore was Dylan Gabriel, now in Cleveland, where he has been pedestrian so far.
So who knows, maybe by staying in school, Moore is doing the Jets a favor.
And while the Jets no doubt need to find a QB, their defense is broken, and they might need as many as 7-8 new starters on that side of the ball.
You could argue that with four picks in the top 45, two in the first round and two in the second, the Jets need to land at least three defensive starters.
So maybe with pick 2, they can land a defensive difference-maker.
