Look, mock drafts don’t mean that much in the grand scheme of things.
After all, the “mock drafters” aren’t team decision makers.
So I don’t want to be too critical of who people chose to pick for the Jets in their mock drafts.
But now I’ve seen four mock drafts, from people I respect, having the Jets picking a wide receiver at 16.
All of them have the Jets picking Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese at 2, which makes sense, but a receiver at 16?
Did those people watch the Jets’ defense last season?
Getting Reese (pictured above on our latest cover of Jets Confidential Magazine) would help the Jets’ defense, but their defense was so historically bad that you could argue they need 6-7 new defensive starters.
So, the idea of bypassing a defender at 16, to pick a receiver when they already have Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, and John Metchie, how does this make any sense?
This is the NFL, not fantasy football.
Now, if the Jets love a QB available at 16, and turn a card in with that name, that would make more sense. QB-driven league. But a receiver? That is such a luxury pick, something the Jets can’t afford with so many holes to fill on their roster, especially on defense.
You could argue that best plan for the Jets with four premium picks – two in the first round and two in the second round – pick four defensive players, or pick a QB and three defensive players.
The Jets got blown out in their last five games of the regular season, playing a level of defense so low tht we have not seen around here in quite some time.
Receiver at 16?
C’mon now.
