Jets can’t fall for the eye-candy . . .

Facing an elite NFL offensive play-caller is a challenge for any defense.

“(Kyle Shanahan is) one of the best play callers maybe to ever call plays within this game, so it’s going to be a fantastic challenge for us,” said Jets defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich.

Aside from 49ers head coach/OC’s offensive play-calling acumen, what makes his scheme particularly tough for the Jets’ fast, aggressive defense are all the misdirection plays he calls.

When you play a style of defense that stresses running the ball with your hair on fire, it can make you particularly susceptible to bite on misdirection plays if you are not careful.

“It’s going to be a great challenge mentally in that way,” Ulbrich said. “He’s going to make you go through every mental gymnastic.”

Shanahan’s scheme presents a lot of “eye-candy” as they call it in the football world, used to try and get defenders out of position and create space for his offensive play-makers.

Jets defensive back Isaiah Oliver played for the 49ers last year, so he faced San Francisco’s offense on the defensive scout team. He was a big help to the Jets in preparing for the 49ers offense.

“You have to be disciplined in your rules and not overplay things because that is when this 49ers offense will beat you,” Oliver said . . .
