This isn’t working. It hasn’t worked the last few years. Jets need to change it.

In the Rams 19-9 win over the Jets, Los Angeles running back Kyren Williams ran 23 times for 122 yards.

The Jets’ run defense is substandard and essentially has been since the current scheme was installed in 2021.

It calls for undersized, quick defensive linemen to shoot gaps, but these guys often get engulfed by much larger linemen creating big holes for runners. Also, some would argue the scheme is too predictable, making it easy to gameplan against.

“These teams that are staying in one front for the majority of the game are making it pretty easy for the running game to get the blocking angles they are looking for,” North Carolina coach Bill Belichick said early this season, not specifically about the Jets, but about this scheme. The Jets aren’t the only team running it.

Belichick doesn’t seem to like this approach to run defense.

“Some of these teams just believe in playing their front and playing it better with more and more reps – that is fine until it isn’t,” Belichick said.

A long-time NFL personnel executive feels the teams that play this scheme need to help out their players more.

“You need to use scheme to help your team out,” said the former executive. “You need to expand your portfolio to help them.”

This scheme, installed by the former Jets head coach, perhaps needs to go by the wayside after this season.
