East Rutherford – Some people are obsessed with WR Garrett Wilson’s targets in Jets games.
It was a big talking point after the Jets’ loss in New England, then throughout this past week, and then after the team’s loss to Miami on Sunday.
In the Jets’ loss to Miami, Wilson was targeted three times and caught two passes.
Wilson’s targets today had little to do with the Jets’ loss to the Dolphins.
You see, when Wilson gets extra coverage attention, it opens up opportunities for other players getting lighter coverage, and you need to take advantage of it, which TE Mason Taylor and WR Omar Cooper did. Taylor had two touchdown catches in single coverage, and Cooper caught a 60-yard bomb and also hauled in a three-yard TD pass.
Wilson not getting the ball a lot today was not at the top of the list of why they lost.
But you know what was – really bad run defense, which has been a problem most of the season.
The Dolphins ran for 156 yards today.
It’s hard to win in the NFL the way the Jets are playing the run right now.
The Jets’ leading tacklers in this game were safeties Minkah Fitzpatrick (10) and Dane Belton (9).
That is a really bad sign. The same pair led the Jets in tackles in Chicago, in a game the Bears ran for 232 yards. This means a lot of runners are getting to the third level of your defense.
Jets have major issues stopping the run in their front seven.
And that is probably the biggest reason they lost today.
Instead of Wilson yelling at QB Geno Smith on the sideline, maybe he should be yelling at players in the front seven.
