South Florida – The Miami Dolphins don’t have a great offensive line, but it was hard to tell on Monday night.
They started their fourth different right guard last night against the Jets, former New England Patriot Cole Strange, after going with James Daniels, Kion Smith, and Daniel Brunskill. They are starting a backup right tackle, Larry Borom, tasked with protecting lefty QB Tua Tagovailoa’s blindside.
The Jets finished the game with no sacks.
Not only did they have no sacks, the Jets’ defensive line didn’t play that run well, contributing to the Dolphins rushing for 123 yards, including 20 carries for 99 yards by Devon Achane, who broke a lot of tackles.
In Miami, the Jets’ defense was somewhat undisciplined, constantly out of position, biting on a lot of the Dolphins’ motion and misdirection chicanery, “going for the cheese,” as they like to say in the football world.
What’s the problem with the Jets’ defense right now?
It’s probably a combination of things, like players being too aggressive, leading to them being out of position at times, both against the run and the pass. In other words, they are playing hard – effort is not an issue – but not always playing smart.
And also, some dubious roster decisions on the defensive side of the ball, which the brass might need to reflect on moving forward, do some self-scouting as scouts, if you will.
You could argue, from a talent standpoint, that this defense is vastly overrated.
