This Jets’ news is a nothing burger Dan Leberfeld

This New York Jets’ news isn’t a big deal.

Headline – “Jets miss out on top QB coach target, as Brian Callahan joins Raiders”

This means very little.

First of all, there are plenty of good quarterback coaches out there.

And one of them is named “Jeremy Bates.”

ESPN’s Adam Schefter recently announced that Bates, the Jets’ QB coach last season, is likely going to be the team’s next offensive coordinator.

Bates is a long-time QB coach, and let’s be honest, he’s essentially going to be the Jets’ QB coach, even when they hire somebody else; Bates will be very hands-on with the Jets’ quarterbacks.

There a narrative out there in the Jets’ Nation that Bates didn’t do a good job as the team’s QB coach last year because their two young signal-callers didn’t seem to improve. I think that is bull. You can’t teach accuracy and pocket presence. You just can’t. Perhaps the Jets’ personnel department needs to tweak their evaluation criteria.

Bates is a good QB coach; the starter had a solid season before getting hurt.

And even when the Jets hire a QB coach, Bates will be very involved in coaching “the cubes.”

The sun will rise in the Jets’ Nation with Callahan picking the Raiders over the Jets.
