This was a weird thing to say about the Jets on February 18 . . .

“I do not remember an NFL team going into the season with less hope,” said FS1’s Colin Cowherd on February 18.

How can you talk about how a team looks going into a season, before free agency and the draft start?

If a team looks devoid of talent in late August, yeah, you can go there – knock yourself out. It still doesn’t mean the team will be bad, but it’s certainly acceptable commentary at that time.

But to say on February 18, about three weeks before the 2026 NFL business season (new league year) started on March 11, was bizarre.

And since March 11th, the Jets have added a truckload of new talent, like three first-round picks, defensive end David Bailey, tight end Kenyon Sadiq, and wide receiver Omar Cooper, and a bunch of veteran additions, mostly on defense, like linebacker Demario Davis, safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, and defensive tackle David Onyemata.

And they added Geno Smith at QB, who went 9-8, 8-7, and 10-7 as Seattle starter from 2022-24. The Jets think they are getting that Smith, not the one who went 2-13 last year in Las Vegas behind an awful offensive line and with very few weapons. The Jets think that Smith, with veteran NFL play-caller Frank Reich as OC, can do a good job managing the game for them, playing point guard and getting the ball in the hands of their myriad offensive weapons.

Look, nobody is saying the Jets are going to the Super Bowl this year, but for Cowherd to say they have “no hope,” especially when he said it, seemed a little odd.
