It’s well documented that the New York Football Giants are loaded with talented edge-rushers.
So the last couple of days of joint practices between the Jets and Giants were a trial by fire for the Jets’ two young starting offensive tackles – left tackle Olu Fashanu and right tackle Armand Membou.
The Giants’ trio of freakish edge-rushers, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Abdul Carter, gave the Jets two tackles all they can handle, and this will benefit Fashanu and Membou moving forward.
Because in Jets camp, with Jermaine Johnson out, they have only faced one edge-rusher in the class of Burns, Thibodeaux, and Carter, and that is Will McDonald.
It didn’t always go well against the Giants for two tackles, but that’s okay, as long as they learn from it.
Like today, when Thibodeaux got by Fashanu to stop a run by Breece Hall in the backfield, or when Carter got by Membou with a tremendous burst off the ball in a one-on-one pass rush drill.
Jets offensive line coach Steve Heiden will have some quality teachable moments for Fashanu and Membou from these two practices.
And it wasn’t all bad. The Jets tackle tandem held their own on many plays.
But if there is a position group that got the most out of these joint practices, it might be the Jets’ offensive tackles.
