He really didn’t miss much.
Talking about Zach Wilson, whose contract holdout ended today.
Wednesday’s practice was abbreviated, so he really only missed one full practice on Thursday.
In the grand scheme of things this isn’t a big deal, and it was perhaps a little unfair for people to blast the Jets about a two-day holdout.
Why is wrong to demand off-set language? Most teams do.
“I get outside perception, outside narrative, “Same Old Jets,” whatever – it has nothing to do with any of that,” said Jets coach Robert Saleh.
For goodness sake, it was a brief contact holdout. They compromised and worked it out. No big deal.
There was no reason to disparage the Jets over this . . .
I’m not a sports scientist, and don’t play one on TV, but you can tell there are have been myriad changes to the team’s strength and conditioning approach under High Performance Director Brad DeWeese and his large staff. Stretching looks a lot different than the past. This above my paygrade to describe the differences, but I know from watching, it’s not like it used to be.
“They have been world class,” said Jets cornerback Bryce Hall about DeWeese and his staff.
DeWeese and company reportedly are on the cutting edge of sports science, and the Jets hope this will cut down on injuries.
The proof will be in the pudding once the games start, but I’m just pointing out, the strength and conditioning wheel has been reinvented at One Jets Drive, and we will see if it works . . .
Mike White looked good again today, at least from my standpoint. I don’t like to go too far with player assessments in training camp practices, because I don’t know the playbook or the assignments.
But good throws and good catches are pretty cut and dried.
He had a real nice throw on a deep out to WR Jamison Crowder. And this was another example of what has made White impressive in practice – he throws with anticipation, which is so important on the NFL level.
One thing you don’t want to do is throw late, especially on a deep out, and James Morgan got burned doing that today, and was picked off by CB Brandon Echols.
There was kind of this narrative out there that White and Morgan aren’t very good, and that was another big reason the Jets needed to get the Wilson deal done.
You really don’t need to disparage White and Morgan to make the point that getting Wilson signed was very important. Of course it urgent matter to get #2 pick overall signed. That goes without saying.
White has looked very good. Morgan, an incredibly hard worker, isn’t as far along as White, but has a lot of potential.
I will repeat what I have said ad infinitum about White. He looked good in training camp last year, in the spring and in camp so far, but he must play well in the preseason, in real football games, to have a chance at the #2 job. There is only so much you can tell in NFL football practices, most sans tackling . . .
On the first play of the “team” part of practice, in other words, the 11-on-11 scrimmage, DE Carl Lawson dipped under Mekhi Becton to harrass the QB and blew up the play.
Facing Lawson every day in practice is going to be huge for Becton. Aside from being a master technician, Lawson is listed at 6-2 (might be a little shorter), with a low center of gravity, and plays with a low pad level. These kind of guys can be a pain in the butt to really tall tackles like the 6-7 Becton. Like they say in wrestling – “low man wins.” And what Lawson did to Becton on this play will be a great coaching point for Jets O-Line coach John Becton on the importance of Mekhi playing lower, and not letting his pad level rise up too much.
