ESPN’s Rich Cimini announced on his podcast that on July 6, Jets QB Geno Smith was pulled over for going 70 in a 45 MPH zone, and was also cited for not having a license on him.
In June, a woman took to Instagram and posed, “In the viral Instagram video, the woman included a caption that said Smith “beat my ass cause he HATES taking care of his special needs kid and can’t be left alone with him because he’d rather watch s*x online and play Call of Duty.”
That is being investigated by police in South Florida.
Also, on March 18, something else happened, according to the New York Post:
“On a rainy March 18 afternoon, the Jets quarterback was pulled over by a Davie PD officer on a roadway in Davie, Fla. after he had allegedly been driving a Rolls Royce with improper tags. Body camera footage obtained by The California Post on Tuesday shows Smith was not thrilled to have been stopped,” wrote the Post’s Edward Lewis.
According to the Post, Smith was unhappy with the police officer and felt he was being targeted.
“No, no, no,” the officer replied to Smith’s claim he was unfairly singled-out. “You read anybody’s tag. That’s my job. That’s my job, sir.”
According to the Post, Smith then told the cop to “do your job better.”
Some might argue that Smith needs to do his “job better” in representing his new team at the most important position in football, as one of the team’s leaders, and try to stay out of the news. Some would argue he should have his ducks in order regarding obeying the speed limit, registration, and driver’s license laws.
As for the other story with the woman on Instagram, can’t really comment on that, because nothing is proven there, but the two driving issues over the last few months are settled science – he had the wrong plates in March, was speeding, and didn’t have his license in June.
A big narrative being pushed in the echo chamber this off-season is how much Smith has matured since his first stint with the team.
Former NFL QB Shaun King, now a podcaster, questioned that narrative a few months ago.
“You know what’s so funny – I watched multiple (sports shows), and it showed me how little football they really actually consume,” King said on Coach Jason Brown’s podcast. “Because all they talked about was how great this was for the Jets because now there will be an adult in the quarterback room, and a professional guy is going back (to the Jets). Geno acted like the most petulant f-ing child the whole child all year, last year. His body language was shi$%. He was flipping off the fans. And they are up there like he’s this consummate pro. It just reminded me how little f-in football most of those people consume.”
And this comment from King, who is Las Vegas-based, where Smith played last year, was from before the three aforementioned incidents. But once again, let’s just say two incidents, because the Instagram post from the woman is still being investigated.
The way this team is covered now, in a New York market that has gone soft, this stuff will just go away fast and be a nothing burger.
But where there is smoke, there is fire. No matter how minor or major the various charges are, they are charges, and how many other starting QBs in the NFL have been in the news, for the wrong reasons, as much as the Jets QB this offseason?
If you are Woody Johnson, how do you feel about the most important position on your team being in the news this much, for the wrong reasons?
So often, this position sets a tone in the locker room in so many ways.
It’s a QB-driven league.
