This is a flashpoint for the Jets’ season under first-year head coach Aaron Glenn.
Where does the locker room go from here?
Some of the young core players seemed terribly frustrated, and you have to wonder what their mindset is about the coach right now, after what happened at the end of the first and second halves in London.
During an interview with a New York Post reporter on Wednesday, Quinnen Williams refused to answer a bunch of softball questions, repeatedly saying, “I don’t want to answer that.” One was about facing Carolina RB Rico Dowdle, who is coming off two dominant games.
Breece Hall was cornered by reporters, wondering if his cryptic tweet meant he wanted to be traded, and the interview didn’t clear anything up.
Garrett Wilson exploded on Aaron Glenn, going to the locker room at halftime in London over dubious game management at the end of the half.
What kind of headspace are these young players in, with all the losing they have experienced during their time in Florham Park?
And how many of them are thinking about wanting a change of scenery with the trade deadline approaching?
Now, a Wilson trade at this point would make no sense because the cap hit would be enormous since he just signed an extension that included $90 million in guarantees.
But the team could certainly entertain offers for Hall, Quinnen Williams, and Jermaine Johnson.
According to former Last Chance U coach Jason Brown, who does a popular podcast, Dallas and Philadelphia are two potential landing spots for Johnson.
Brown coached Johnson in junior college, and the two remain close. Not saying Brown got this info from Johnson. I have no idea, but he has a good feel for what is going on with the player.
They should probably consider trading Williams, if they can get a quality package in return. They should keep him unless they are blown away by an offer. He is a very good player, but perhaps not a $24 million a year player. You could make an argument the previous regime went a little overboard with the contract.
And Quinnen seems like a guy who desperately needs a change of scenery. Coming from the University of Alabama, where he played under Nick Saban, he’s not used to all this losing, and it seems to be really eating at him.
You have to wonder what the young core is thinking about the new regime, after what happened at the end of the two halves in London, and also the decision not to insert QB Tyrod Taylor into a winnable game with the starter struggling.
Not saying the team is turning on the coach. Not at all, but some might be a little perplexed at some of the decision-making and where things are headed, if dubious decision-making continues.
Williams was not in the mood to do an interview yesterday, just six games into the season, which makes you wonder what is going through his head about the current state of the team, and perhaps he’s not alone in the clubhouse.
To his credit, he did talk today.
So Glenn needs to coach some really good, clean games coming up here to stave off the doubt some might have about him after the Denver game, especially some of the young stars. Late-round guys and journeyman free agent types, you generally don’t have to worry about guys like that – they are just trying to hang on for dear life, and how much do their opinions of the coach really matter? They are just trying to survive and produce good tape.
But if you lose the stars, that is a big problem.
Not saying he has, but if this continues, it’s certainly a risk.
So with all that being said, if they are struggling on offense against the Panthers on Sunday, and it’s a winnable game, it would be shocking if they don’t turn to Tyrod Taylor at some point in the game.
While there is clearly some confirmation bias at work here, if Glenn doesn’t make that change, if it can help them win the game, it could hurt him in the locker room and the stadium could go nuts . . .
Former Jets safety Victor Green, who was a teammate of Aaron Glenn with the Jets, feels the team might need to make coordinator changes. After the last game, seeing a lot of negative comments from Jets fans on social media, Green tweeted, “Guys, I see the comments. I agree with a lot of them. I stand by AG. But after assessing his staff, there’s definitely a need for changes in OC, DC.” . . .
