You can’t teach instincts . . .
Jamal Adams instincts are off-the-charts.
If you are going to be a great defensive back in the NFL, you can’t be a “see-and-go reactor” as scouts put it. You have to see things before they happen.
Adams often sees things before they happen.
Two examples of this today.
First, he had perfect coverage on a deep cross to Jalin Marshall – right in the receiver’s hip pocket. The pass was incomplete because Adams was basically right in front of Marshall.
Then, on a bootleg to the right side by Josh McCown, Marshall jumped the route (I forget to write down the receiver’s name – sorry) and had a near pick.
If you are going to be an elite NFL defensive back, you must have great coverage instincts. Think back to Ed Reed, or Darrelle Revis (in his prime).
I know it’s early, but in Adams, I’m seeing a player with great instincts . . .
Rookie wide receiver Ardarius Stewart seems to be in a little bit of a funk right now. In a drill early in practice, with no defense, he had a drop on an easy pass.
He should be good in time, but right now he’s having a rough time . . .
Inside linebacker Demario Davis is having a terrific training camp in run support and in pass coverage.
He had a nice stop on a run by running back Marcus Murphy on the line . . .
It looks like Mr. Coffee has uncovered a potential cornerback gem in the sixth-round of the draft.
I don’t have number to back this up, but based on my observations after working every day of practice, it’s quite possible that Derrick Jones has the most PD’s of any Jets cornerback in camp.
Every time you turn around, he’s breaking up a pass.
Bryce Petty threw a deep out to Charone Peake, and Jones had a PD.
Some reporters jokingly call him “Cro” during practice because he’s tall and lanky and wears #31, but sometimes, he looks like a young Cro with his speed, length and leaping ability.
I understand he needs some work after spending a lot time at receiver at Ole Miss, but when you break up as many passes as this guy has in the first two weeks of camp, that doesn’t happen by accident.
There are players much higher on the depth chart then him who haven’t broken up as many passes as this guy.
Jones is looking like a real nice sixth-round pick for the Jets . . .
Christian Hackenberg had a really impressive example of effectively going through reads.
He looked to the left side, and then smoothly turned his head to the right hitting Charone Peake on a cross on the right side.
So many young quarterbacks lock on their first read, so plays like this are of great import with developing signal-callers . . .
Bryce Petty has done some good things this summer, but still has an issue at times with not pulling the trigger fast enough.
He ran a bootleg to the right side, right by where I was standing. Tight end Chris Gragg was open for a several seconds before Petty pulled the trigger. The pass was complete, but if he had delivered it sooner, Gragg could have run for more yards after the catch.
Like I’ve mentioned many times, he needs to “speed up his internal clock.”
