The handling of the Jets’ off-season assistant-coaching carousel has been quite eclectic.
Eight assistant coaches were fired nearly three weeks after the season.
The DC search went from interviewing candidates to handle the job to Aaron Glenn deciding he would call the defense and hire somebody to help him with that.
But whatever you think of how this has been handled, the proof will be in the pudding with the results in this upcoming season.
And it doesn’t matter what anybody thinks about how Glenn is handling things aside from Woody Johnson, and perhaps his right-hand men, Ira Axselrad and Hymie Elhai.
The NFL world is not democratic. Fans have no power over what a team does. None.
Glenn has the power now, and he will do things as he sees fit.
You saw that with the Aaron Rodgers meeting, about a year ago, a very brief meeting, that the QB didn’t think was handled ideally.
Some might think it was handled great, but the QB wasn’t one of them. Very brief.
But once again, it doesn’t matter. Glenn is ruling the roost, with Woody, Ira and Hymie chiming in here and there, likely from a financial perspective, and Glenn has his own unique MO, and he’s going to handle things any darn way he pleases.
“Really does not matter one bit who Glenn hires – apathy has set in with this fanbase,” a fan named Tony Socia tweeted on Tuesday.
Doesn’t matter whether there is apathy. NFL teams do just fine whether there is apathy or no apathy.
It’s like people threatening that they are going to boycott the Super Bowl because a controversial singer named “Bad Bunny” is going to sing at halftime. What difference is that going to make? The next TV contracts between the NFL and the Networks will be even bigger than the last, and the last ones were huge.
I doubt this threat will impact the ratings one iota.
Let’s see on Monday, but I doubt “Bad Bunny” performing will impact the ratings.
And the NFL TV money that the teams make from the networks is so insane these days, that can offset the impact of apathy, vis-Ã -vis staying away from the stadiums.
So you basically need to accept what these teams decide to do, coaching hires, player acquisitions, and so forth, or just choose to move on with your life.
These teams are going to be fine, with or without you.
So whether you like what Glenn is doing or not, like what Woody, Ira, and Hymie are doing or not, it doesn’t matter. You don’t have a vote.
And the TV money is so absurd; if some fans stay away because they are dismayed by how the team is being run, it doesn’t really matter. These teams will be fine.
So Glenn is going to run things how he sees fit, and you can choose to watch the team or not.
So what is going on with the OC search?
Zach Rosenblatt of the New York Times tweeted that he “would expect the Jets OC search to wrap up pretty soon.”
So there is your guidance on where things stand:
“Would expect the Jets OC to wrap up pretty soon.”
They are going to “wrap up pretty soon,” not after the draft, minicamp, or Week 1?
So there you have it.
That is what qualifies as a scoop these days.
So Glenn can do whatever he wants, and you can choose to go along for the ride or not.
And if you don’t, the Jets and the NFL will be just fine.
Thanks to billions in TV money.
Buckle up and enjoy a wild off-season, but take a Stoic view of what happens – “Don’t worry about things you have no control over.”
