East Rutherford – When we think of cornerback play, we mainly focus on the coverage aspect of the job.
And the Jets corners did a good job in that area in their win over the Oakland Raiders.
But just as impressive as their coverage, was their tackling.
Let’s be honest, the Jets’ starting corners didn’t tackle well last year.
Antonio Cromartie is a talented cover man, but he isn’t a very good tackler. Dee Milliner has the talent and mindset to be a good tackler, but his technique wasn’t great as a rookie, and he missed too many tackles. This should improve in the future.
Antonio Allen and Darrin Walls both did an excellent job tackling against the Raiders.
When asked about his performance, Allen said, “I thought I did pretty good. (I)came up and made a couple big third down stops.”
And both these plays were in the fourth quarter, with Allen coming up and stopping WR James Jones, and then WR Denarius Moore, short of the first down, to end two Raiders possessions.
This was one of the better cornerback tackling games by the Jets in recent memory.
