Morris County – So who has the advantage at quarterback in the Miami Dolphins-New York Jets game? The Dolphins are starting backup quarterback Matt Moore.
Sometimes perception isn’t reality.
Some people will say, “Hey, the Jets have a good chance in this game – the Dolphins are starting their backup quarterback – Matt Moore.”
I personally don’t think this tilts the scale at all.
In the first Jets-Dolphins game in South Florida, Tannehill wasn’t much of a factor. In fact, he was somewhat neutered.
It was almost like Dolphins head coach Adam Gase wanted him to hand off to Jay Ajayi and get the heck out of the way. He was virtually a non-factor in that game. The Jets were riding a hot streak at the time on the back of Ajayi and their terrific offensive line.
Two week ago, when a team (the Baltimore Ravens) finally stopped Ajayi, and made Tannehill beat them, he had a horrendous game.
So to me, going from Tannehill to Moore isn’t a drop-off. Moore, who has starting experience, is more than capable of getting the job done.
And Moore is better than raw Bryce Petty at this point, so it you were to check a box at this position, in a head-to-head match-up graphic, you’d give Miami the quarterback advantage in this game.
Look, I’m not looking to beat up Petty, but man does he have a lot of work to do. That Baylor system can really mess you up. It’s good for college, but awful for pro preparation. Shotgun, one read, school-yard stuff.
Petty is tough as boot leather, but he needs a lot of work on reading defenses, pocket presence and footwork.
I’m just keeping it real folks. This guy, like a lot of young quarterbacks out of college spead offenses, is a major work-in-progress.
Petty took over for RG III at Baylor. Actually Nick Florence was between them. Florence moved on from football after Baylor (maybe he realized how tough it is to transition from that offense to the NFL). RG III is nearing the end. He came back last week for
Cleveland, and had a terrible game.
It’s a really hard transition.
We will see if Petty can make it.
But to me, the Dolphins have the advantage at quarterback this week.
Moore is better than Petty.
Also, Moore will have the better offensive line in this game. He will have two first round offensive tackles. The Jets are starting their backup left tackle and third-string right tackle. Cam Wake, Mario Williams and Adrian Branch are licking their chops.
If the Jets are going to win this game, they will need to finally get some turnovers on defense, and perhaps a big game on special teams.
I really like the Jets new kick and punt returner, former Auburn star Nick Marshall. He’s a smooth, patient glider with good vision. I think he’s going to break one before the season is over. Perhaps the Jets finally found their guy.
