While there is a lot of focus on Aaron Glenn and whether he should return as Jets coach, that conversation is probably a waste of time, because both Albert Breer and Dianna Russini announced that firing him isn’t even a consideration.
So while people are super-focused on the coaching of this team, and rightfully so, perhaps there isn’t enough focus on the player personnel decisions that led to the roster of a team that got blown out in the last five games of the season.
Injuries, or no injuries, you could make a strong argument that this team needs 8 or 9 new defensive starters. I’m not embellishing.
The contract given to QB Justin Fields was shocking. Two-years, $40 million, with $30 million, for a QB who entered last off-season with a 14-30 starting record. Mac Jones got a two-year deal for $8.2 million from San Francisco. Let that sink in.
What led to that Fields contract? What led to anointing him the starter without a competition?
What led to a linebacker, with suspect film, especially in coverage, getting a three-year, $45 million deal, with $30 million guaranteed? Unbelievable.
I’m not going to blame Darren Mougey for some of this stuff, unless you tell me he has final say. If you can prove that, then I’ll blame him.
But there is no doubt the Jets need to make some significant changes to their player personnel approach, especially with all the draft capital and cap space they have coming.
And I’m not talking about firing people. Perhaps the “final say” power needs to be tweaked.
Something is amiss.
