People make assumptions based on past connections, but sometimes it’s the opposite that actually exists.
There has been a lot of speculation about two potential landing spots for Mark Sanchez – the St. Louis Rams and Cleveland Browns.
Of course, one could assume that those would be potential landing spots since two former Jets assistants are working for those teams.
Former Jets offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer has the same job in St. Louis, and former Jets defensive coordinator Mike Pettine is the head coach of the Cleveland Browns.
But making those connections might have make sense on the surface, but not if you look beneath the surface.
As that old expression goes, “familiarity breeds contempt.”
Basically, what the oft-used saying means is, the more you are around a person, the more you get to know them, the more chance there is that you will have issues with them.
Let’s get real with the Sanchez-Schotty angle.
Sanchez regressing in 2011 contributed to Schottenheimer getting fired after that season.
Whether you think that is fair or not, it’s the reality.
So why would Schottenheimer recommend that player to the Rams brass?
That would be bizarre.
Sanchez to the Rams was never going to happen, and that door was closed today when they signed former Detroit Lion and San Francisco 49er Shaun Hill to backup Sam Bradford.
As for Pettine.
He’s not a fan of Sanchez as a quarterback.
His defense, for the most part, had a terrific season in 2011, and the team’s horrific offense, wasted that effort.
Behind the scenes, Pettine was trashing the offense, and remember, he was fingered as “Deep-Jet” by Mike Francesa and others – in other words, Manish Mehta’s main source. And remember, there were some unnamed Jets, in Mehta articles, ripping Sanchez.
So it would be shocking if Pettine signed Sanchez, unless he’s really two-faced.
The most logical spot for Sanchez is Philadelphia.
But it’s hard to believe any rumors coming out of that place – see DeSean Jackson.
Sanchez will likely get a job, but he’s not a hot property right now, coming off two rough seasons (2011-2012) and then major shoulder surgery in 2013 . . .
Speaking of DeSean Jackson, the player claimed the other day he’s staying in Philly, based on a chat he had with Chip Kelly.
He clearly misinterpreted what the coach said, or the coach misled him, one of the other.
“We’ve had a good conversation, and we’re always going to do what’s best for the football team,” Kelly said. “But I think he knows where we are, and I know where he is. I feel very comfortable about it.”
Does that sound like Jackson’s staying?
Clearly, he can stay, if he takes a pay cut. Jackson has a $12.75 million salary cap charge in 2014. The Eagles don’t want him taking up that much space.
Also, in my opinion, Kelly is taking his time on this because he’s trying to increase the offers from other teams.
Clearly, he feels he’s getting low-balled right now.
Kelly told Jackson what he needed to right now. He has some snake oil salesman in him. He was a great recruiter at Oregon. Such a great recruiter, they were sanctioned by the NCAA after he left.
But if Jackson thinks that his conversation with Kelly means the receiver is definitely staying in Philly, he’s a little naive . . .
