JC asked Zach Wilson today about his great chemistry
with Braxton Berrios (pictured above) in the spring practices. Today, they once again had a few nice connections.
“Braxton is a smart guy, that’s one of his best attributes,” Wilson said. “He’s a slippery player, he gets in there and runs some great routes. He’s quick, but I think the best attribute is just knowing what’s going on. He’s got a great feel for the defense, he’s got great hands. He’s just been in those spots to make plays.”
In other words, he’s in the right spots and Wilson can trust him . . .
An interesting prospect, who has kind of flown under the radar, but got some primetime reps today, was rookie DT Michael Dwumfour, who played last year at Rutgers as a grad student, after transferring from Michigan. The Scotch Plains, New Jersey-native got some starting reps today at Jets practice.
Granted, the Jets were with out Quinnen Williams (foot), Foley Fatukasi (knee) and Jonathan Marshall (undisclosed injury), but the fact is, Dwumfour was starting.
He’s a squatty 6-1, 296-pound defensive tackle, with a good motor, who does a nice job getting under the pad level of taller offensive linemen.
He had a PD today on a pass by Mike White, knocking it down on the line . ..
We all know the Jets have some question marks at cornerback, and today, some of their rookie corners did some good things. Fifth-round pick Jason Pinnock had a PD on a deep out to WR Josh Malone, and also had a PD down the left sideline on WR Denzel Mims. Bryce Hall had great coverage on WR Corey Davis on an incomplete deep pass, and Isaiah Dunn had PD on a post route to WR Elijah Moore . . .
LaMarcus Joyner not only should help the Jets with his ability at safety, but also his leadership. He was often seen tutoring young defensive backs throughout the spring. And the last couple of days, he was seen going over mental reps with Marcus Maye and Ashtyn Davis, who both missed the spring practices, Maye due to his contract impasse and Davis, due to a foot injury . . .
Rookie free agent tight end Kenny Yeboah, who struggled on Tuesday with some drops, caught the ball a lot better today. Sometimes rookie targets in the passing game, will have some drops in early practices, because they’re thinking so much about their assignments, it leads to drops. NFL playbooks are a lot thicker and more complext than college playbooks . . .
In the battle for the #2 QB job (if the Jets don’t bring in a veteran), White is clearly ahead of James Morgan. White continues to look good out there, with his quick decision making and accuracy . . .
Woody Johnson spoke to the media today, and seems to be taking a hands-off approach with the GM/coach combination that his brother put in place when Woody was in Great Britain.
“They’ve got a tremendous amount of leeway,” Woody Johnson said. “Chris [Johnson] made some unbelievable choices, and we’re lucky to get both of those gentlemen.”
This comment is important. Woody seems to be in lockstep with Christopher in letting this GM/coach combination do their jobs with a “soft touch,” to use a phrase that Christopher used after hiring Douglas.
