Probably a good sign for Jets . . .
Last Thursday, Jets defensive tackle Foley Fatukasi went down with a leg injury on the first play of the 11-on-11 part of an OTA pra.ctice. It looked like a knee.
Today, Wednesday, Fatakasi wasn’t practicing, but he was rehabbing on a distant field. This is a very good sign for the Jets, because if it was a serious knee injury, he likely wouldn’t be in that on-field rehab area. Generally, this area, is for minor, short-term injuries.
So it looked like the Jets caught a break here. Fatukasi is an ascending player, who played very well last year, and seems poised for another big year. He arrived as a raw sixth-round pick out of UConn in 2018, and has worked his tail off over the last three years to take his game to a much higher level.
It looks like the Jets could have a terrific defensive tackle formation with the likes of Quinnen Williams, Sheldon Rankins, Foley Fatukasi and Ronald Blair (who can play tackle and end) . . .
Once again, it is hard to be too critical without knowing if there is a personal issue the individual is dealing with, but on the surface, it is surprising that Mekhi Becton and Ashytyn Davis weren’t on the practice field for today’s OTA practice, just like last Thursday, the first open OTA to the press.
Eventually we will find out what is up here, but they both need all the work they can get.
But once again, not judging here without knowing the explanation. Surely, we will find out very soon what’s up here. Just talking here from a football development standpoint . . .
With no Davis or Marcus Maye, who clearly isn’t partaking in the spring because he wants a long-term contract, the only four safeties on the field for the Jets were Lamarcus Joyner, J.T. Hassell, Zane Lewis and and Jordyn Peters . . .
Don’t understand these media QB stats from spring practices you read some places. Makes no sense. These practices are about teaching, learning, getting on the same page and working the kinks out, not stats . . .
Zach Wilson has a lot of learn at this point, but one clear special part of his skill set is his combination of quick decisions and a quick release. That is a combination that will lead to a lot of really good results . . .
Chuma Edoga, who is working with the offensive tackles, went down with what looked like a knee injury today, but to his credit, after getting treated by trainers, he came back towards the end of practice . . .
The underrated John Franklin-Myers had a “sack” today, getting to Zach Wilson, blowing up a play. I put “sack” in quotes because you can’t touch or tackle the quarterback in these practices, but “JFM” did wreck this play . . .
The Jets union rep, Greg Van Roten, and first alternate union rep, George Fant, have been at the spring practices. We all know there has been a push back from the union about these spring practices, including from Union President JC Tretter, the Cleveland center, who is not at his team’s OTAs, to make a statement. Van Roten and Fant clearly know the Jets have a lot of work to do, and are participating in these CBA-sanctioned workouts (the union checked off on these workouts in the last CBA negotiation).
