The Jets have won two games in a row, which they deserve credit for, but we will certainly find out more about their progress in the next two games, against two of the better teams in the AFC – New England and Baltimore.
While the Ravens are only 4-5, they are surging after a slow start, and have been one of the better teams in the AFC over the last few years.
The Jets’ last two wins were over Cincinnati (now 3-6) and Cleveland (now 2-7).
The next two games will be more of a litmus test in terms of their progress.
Not many people expect them to win either one of these games, so you could argue that litmus test isn’t winning one or both games, but how competive they are, and if they hang around, and avoid lopsided losses, like the Buffalo game earlier in the year.
In order to potentiall pull an upside in either one of these games, they are likely going to need more from their passing game then we saw in their win over Cleveland.
Against the Browns, Justin Fields threw for 54 yards, and 42 of them came on a screen to Breece Hall that he took for a touchdown.
So they threw for 12 yards in the game aside from this play.
They will need more to hang with New England’s offense, which has having a terrific season.
Aaron Glenn hasn’t announced who is starting QB will be in the game.
We will likely find out sometimes Wednesday or Thursday from one of the national insiders.
But you would have to figure if he starts Justin Fields, and the Jets’ passing game starts this game stuck in the mud, continuing the trend from last game, a QB change in-game might not be out of the question . . .
Mazi Smith certainly looks the part for an NFL nose tackle at 6-3, 330, and it was certainly worthwhile for the Jets to take a flyer on him, as an additional piece from Dallas in the Quinnen Williams trade, but you have to wonder how much more they will be able to get out of him than the Cowboys.
In his first action as a Jet, against Cleveland, he was on the field for some big chunk runs up the middle by the Browns.
He was locked up by center Ethan Pocic on a trio of plays: 11 and 9-yard runs by Quinshon Judkins, and a 16-yard run by Malachi Corley. Obviously runs like these often aren’t the fault of one player, but he was in the middle of the action on all three.
While he looks the part, there is something amiss, and we shall see if Jets defensive line coach Eric Washington can fix whatever that is.
To Smith’s credit, in the third quarter, Smith did disrupt a Judkins rush attempt up the middle, forcing the runner to change course, and Brandon Stephens made the tackle for a loss of one. Smith didn’t make the tackle, but he certainly contributed to the run’s failure.
So there is potential there. We will see what Washington can do with molding this ball of clay. . .
Joe Tippmann has settled in nicely as a right guard, and he had the biggest block of the game by an offensive lineman, when he pulled right on the aforementioned Hall TD on a screen, and pulverized Browns linebacker Carson Schwesinger, and the running back was off to the races.
During his short time at the position, Tippmann has turned into an excellent pulling guard.
Another nice block on this play was by Tyler Johnson downfield. Johnson is a heck of a blocking receiver, and has had numerous key blocks this season . . .
Aaron Glenn was mad at a reporter Rich Cimini, for announcing that Garrett Wilson is going to be out 3-4 weeks with a knee injury, and said all injury questions should go to the ESPN scribe.
“”I’m going to pass on talking about injuries, since Rich [points to where Cimini usually sits] — oh, he’s not here — has all the answers, so you guys can get all the injuries from Rich,” Glenn said on Tuesday.
Look, I have no issue with Glenn being pissed off that this leaked out, but shouldn’t he be more angry with where the leak came from than with the reporter?
Could it have come from somebody at Wilson’s agency, CAA, which I believe might have Glenn as well?
I don’t know if the leak came from CAA, but often these kinds of leaks do.
Glenn might want to investigate whether the agency that reps him was involved in this, don’t you think.
Just to be clear again. I don’t know if the leak came from CAA, but Glenn is looking to get to the bottom of this; it might be an angle he should look into . . .
