This is what happens when you do business with people like this.
As many of you know by now, WFAN’s Craig Carton’s asked Zach Wilson the following question during an appearance by the Jets QB on the “Carton and Roberts” show.
“Your mom has become the lead story, and I say that respectfully because people are like, ‘the star of the first round of the draft is Mrs. Wilson because she’s a very attractive woman,'” Carton said. “And, I’m just wondering how awkward that is for you, that you just got picked second overall in the NFL draft, and the focus is, wow, his mom is really hot.”
Wilson responded: “Yeah, it’s not my favorite for sure. I like to keep her out of the spotlight. She’s an awesome lady and I love having her support.”
Many people were offended by Carton for asking that question to a 21-year-old son about his mother.
Instead of apologizing for his poor judgment in asking such a question, Carton slammed the critics:
“I guarantee, the people that came out of the gate attacking me on it, were probably the same people that thought his mom was hot, they were ogling her. They also, a far majority of them probably never heard [the interview], didn’t see it, don’t listen to the show. And this was their chance to be woke.
“And by the way, if you interviewed Zach Wilson and did not ask him about it, you should never be able to do another interview again, because you suck at it.”
What can you say to such an explanation for such a classless question?
Not much, except that you will never be able to explain to this kind of person that what he did was out of line.
But the more important lesson that needs to be taken from this embarrassing episode is the Jets need to be a little more careful with player placement on shows.
Actually, they are usually pretty good at not putting players on shows with shock jocks, so we will cut them some slack.
But moving forward, the Jets need to protect Wilson to the nth degree and make sure he doesn’t have to deal with a distraction like this. All his focus needs to be on football and becoming the best NFL QB he can be. That is it. The other stuff can wait. He has a lot on his plate right now learning to be an NFL QB, perhaps the hardest job in all of sports.
Of course, there are going to be distractions along the way. It’s hard to prevent them 100 percent, but putting Wilson on with Carton could be considered by some a self-inflicted wound.
Joe Douglas must make sure that his prized rookie QB is handled with care by everyone in the building, and isn’t overused as a marketing tool.
Let him do his weekly press conference with the media, and that is it as a rookie. Handle it like New England does with rookies, doing the bare minimum with the media.
And never, ever, ever allow Wilson to go on with a shock job ever again. The kid has enough on his plate without a shock job asking him about his mother’s looks.
