Aaron Glenn after practice today:
“Some days the offense will have a great day, other days the defense will have a great day, and it’s always going to be this jockeying for position, and today I thought the defense really stood out on what they came out to do,” Glenn said. “So, hats off to those guys.”
Yes, clearly the defense looked good today, but maybe part of that is the Jets’ continuing issues in the passing game.
Their passing offense has been moribund so far in camp, and today was no different.
It has not been easy to evaluate receivers and tight ends in camp because there have not been a ton of opportunities.
Their practice ended on a positive note for the Jets’ offense with a pass from QB Justin Fields to tight end Mason Taylor on the left side of the end zone.
But leading up to that, it was another very quiet day through the air.
In the middle of practice, there was a nice pass where Fields rolled right and hit WR Josh Reynolds down the right side for a nice gain, but in a real football game, this play likely would have been over before this completion happened. Sometimes, training camp plays last longer than a play in a real game because you can’t touch the QB in practice.
Fields needed to make a quicker decision than he did on this play.
He’s got to speed up his internal clock.
Some might argue that Justin Fields isn’t going to turn into a different NFL QB in Year Five than he was in years 1-4. We shall see.
But so far in camp, not been a lot of highlights through the air. Garrett Wilson, through no fault of his own, has had a quiet camp . . .
DE Jermaine Johnson, who is on the PUP list, was working on the side field, and it looked like he was running full-speed sprints. He looks very close to a return . . .
Rookie safety Malachi Moore had a couple more nice plays today, stopping a receiver in the left flat on a pass from Brady Cook for no gain. He also had a run stop on a run by Kene Nwangwu on a pitch to the left side.
One thing is pretty clear watching Moore early in camp – he has very good instincts, obviously a very important characteristic at the safety position.
This guy has the potential to be a fourth-round steal . . .
Defensive tackle Leonard Taylor showed impressive first-step quickness on a play today where he shot into the backfield so fast, he forced a fumble as Cook was handing off to RB Donovan Edwards. We talked yesterday about five-star DT recruit Byron Cowart, who every big program wanted out of high school. The same was the case with Taylor, who, like Cowart, went on to have a nondescript college career. Cowart went to Auburn/Maryland, and Taylor attended the University of Miami.
Taylor needs to be more consistent, but his quickness off the ball for a 300-pounder is undeniable . . .
Speaking of defensive tackle with a nice burst, that is what Jay Tufele looks like so far in camp. He flashed on a couple of plays today. He beat offensive tackle Chuk Okorafor for a QB pressure, and had an impressive run stop where he got into the backfield and had a big hit on Breece Hall, who was slow to get up . . .
Will McDonald continues to give Armand Membou fits. Today he beat the rookie offensive tackle off the edge, rushing a QB into an incompletion . . .
Defensive back Isaiah Oliver had a nice PD on a deep out from Tyrod Taylor to wide receiver Brandon Smith.
Oliver’s ability to back up at every position in the secondary is going to come in handy for Aaron Glenn’s defense . . .
