Getting a little tired of this irrelevant angle.
There was a story with the headline – “‘He’s not trying to be a celebrity’ – How Justin Fields differs from Aaron Rodgers.”
That’s great that he’s supposedly not trying to be a celebrity, but how does that help the Jets on Sundays?
The guy who supposedly was trying to be a celebrity is a four-time MVP who 153-87-1 as a starter, and the guy who is supposedly not trying to be a celebrity is 14-30.
This isn’t meant to be a shot at Fields, who could do great with the Jets. That story has yet to be written.
But this idea that his personality compared to Rodgers is going to benefit the Jets is tertiary nonsense.
First of all, not sure how Rodgers is trying to be a celebrity.
Who was the last celebrity who got married, but nobody knows who his wife is?
Rodgers might be a little eccentric, but does celebrity really drive him? That is debatable.
But even if you think that Rodgers is trying to be a celebrity and Fields isn’t, what does any of that have to do with pre-snap reads, post-snap reads, going through progressions, manipulating defensive backs with your eyes, and all the important stuff NFL QBs need to do, which Rodgers is really good at.
Stuff that Fields is a work in progress doing.
Hey, Fields might take a big step in this stuff this season. We shall see. But nobody in football would argue, based on each player’s past film, that Rodgers is better at this stuff as we sit here right now.
This isn’t a personality contest. This is the most important position in all of sports, along with one of the more complex.
Can you do the job or not?
Perhaps some in the new regime weren’t fans of Rodgers’ act, but the QB seemed pretty popular with his teammates in the locker room over his two seasons with the team.
Maybe Fields is easier to relate to than Rodgers for some, but how is that going to lead to the Jets doing better with Fields under center compared to Rodgers?
Starting Sunday, we will start to find out whether Fields is a better option than Rodgers at QB for the Jets.
And then we will get more and more clues as the season progresses.
If Rodgers plays a lot better than Fields, and the Steelers have a much better season than the Jets because of that, Aaron Glenn might get some heat from the fans.
We will see how this story evolves.
But anybody who thinks that the Jets are in a better place now at QB, because Fields is supposedly easier to get along with and lower maintenance than Rodgers, not sure how long that narrative is going to fly with the public.
Look, Fields could end up being a terrific answer for the Jets, but it’s not going to be because of his personality; it’s going to be how he performs for the Jets at the NFL’s most important position.
