Whoever the Jets pick as their next GM and coach, if they want that tandem to be successful, perhaps they should give them a budget, and let them run the football operation, sans interference from businessmen.
Otherwise, they might be looking again in two or three years.
It just seems like too often, the GM and coach are hindered by businessmen telling them what they can and can’t do regarding staffing and player contracts.
Things like whether to pay Bryce Huff, have an assistant GM position, the size of the conditioning staff and so forth.
“[The owner] wants to itemize, nitpick, and line item everything that goes on,” said former NFL GM Mike Lombardi on VSIN. “‘You are not replacing this scout, I don’t want you to do that.’ You might as well name yourself GM.”
Of course the owner has a right to have a major say in spending. He owns the team. But perhaps an ideal approach with the new GM and coach, whoever they are, is to give them a budget, and let them decide how to use it.
