In their HC/GM search, the Jets can learn lesson from Atlanta . . .

The Jets need to learn from the Atlanta Falcons and not be scared off by a great football man who might want to disrupt the status quo.

Last off-season, it looked like the Falcons were on the brink of hiring Bill Belichick as their coach, but then pivoted to Raheem Morris.

What happened?

Some speculated that existing executives were “protecting their desks.”

In other words, they were afraid of losing power if Belichick came aboard, so they pushed for a candidate who would fit into the existing structure. Morris was not looking to make changes to the Falcons’ modus operandi.

The Falcons got blown out by Minnesota on Sunday, after getting dominated by Denver a few weeks ago. Their defense is a disaster. Perhaps they could have used Belichick, one of the greatest defensive minds in NFL history.

Woody and Christopher Johnson need to learn from the Falcons, and not be afraid to hire a Mike Vrable-type and give him more power than they have given coaches before, perhaps tweaking the separation of powers approach, with the coach just coaching the team, and the GM just picking the roster.

Could some people at the table not want to hire a football czar-type who would want control of the football operation? Is it possible they wouldn’t want to hire a powerful, alpha dog leader, like a Sean Payton-type (obviously not Payton, but that kind of guy) because their football power will be minimized?

I have no idea, but Woody and Christopher can’t let this happen.

A great candidate is a great candidate, and if some feelings get hurt, with people losing a little juice, so be it.
