Jets owner Woody Johnson fired GM Joe Douglas this morning.
He named Phil Savage the interim GM.
Savage is a good choice for this role.
Highly respected in the football world, Savage is a sage football man, who has been in player personnel since 1993, including a stint as Cleveland Browns GM from 2005-08 and running the Senior Bowl from 2012-18.
From 2019 until today, Savage was a senior personnel advisor with the Jets, working as a consultant for the club from his Mobile, Alabama home.
He’s an ideal pick to help the Jets navigate the challenging waters ahead of them.
Woody Johnson said in a statement today: “We will begin the process to identify a new General Manager immediately.”
It could be in the Jets’ best interest that the “we” includes a football man like Savage, not just money managers and lawyers.
As far as interim GMs, you will not do much better than Savage.
