The Jets have now missed the playoffs for 15 years in a row.
After each of these seasons, Jets owner Woody Johnson reviews what went wrong with people.
But who are these people?
Does he have a football guy to lean on in these conversations?
And I’m not talking about the coach and GM. Talking about somebody else, a football guy, who can help the owner review everything football-related, including the GM and the coach.
The coach and GM, and there have been many, aren’t the best people to review themselves.
And neither are lawyers and financial planners.
Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan, whose franchise was struggling for many years, hired former Jaguars great Tony Boselli to be his sounding board after last season.
The Jags went 13-4 this year and won the AFC South.
Obviously, the turnaround wasn’t all because of Boselli; Liam Coen had a lot to do with it, but Big Tony, was a huge help.
There are rumors that the Atlanta Falcons are going to hire the team’s former standout QB, Matt Ryan, to a role similar to Boselli’s in Jacksonville.
Johnson desperately needs somebody like this if the Jets hope to turn things around.
Hey, maybe this guy would be a good candidate, and I’m not kidding – Bart Scott.
He’s no-nonsense, has no filter, and all you have to do is listen to him talk football after games to see how deeply he understands the sport and how to be successful. He learned a ton from his time as a player with the Baltimore Ravens. Under Ozzie Newsome and company, the Ravens have had a great football culture for a long time.
Scott, Chad Cascadden, Chad Pennington – somebody like that, who Woody could bounce things off of in times of football crisis.
As the old saying goes, “You can’t keep doing the same thing over and over again and expect a different result.”
Something needs to change in the approach, the structure.
And I’m not saying fire the current HC or GM.
This is an entirely different role, and one that this organization desperately needs.
And has for a long time.
A true football guy, aside from the HC or GM, in the owner’s ear
